American Sign Language Pedagogy at Kent State

Employment related to American Sign Language

Lots of students (Deaf, deaf, Hearing, HOH)...and parents....and staff (!)... come and ask me, "What kinds of jobs are available with ASL?  What can a graduate DO with a degree in ASL?"  My answer is usually, EVERYTHING - especially if they have the grades and portfolio to demonstrate that they not only completed ASL classes, but also gained ASL fluency,  participated in the Deaf community, and developed quality work habits and independence.  Preparing for any career takes PLANNING and WORK.

Students who have completed their education minor can go into teaching ASl at public schools.  After developing some experience, they can then teach at community colleges.  More and more universities and colleges (KSU included) are now requiring advanced degrees for college-level teaching, so students who have experience teaching at secondary schools usually then pursue graduate education prior to applying to teach at university programs.

ASL majors can also go into law, advocacy, psychology, mental health, social services, and rehabilitiation. They can pursue careers and graduate education in anthropology, justice studies, media, public administration, and various medical fields, as well as special education, educational administration, and public policy.  Theatre, business administration, and linguistics are additional areas in which a background in ASL can be of benefit.  Federal and local government entities, as well as multiple nonprofit organizations, frequently advertise for people who are fluent in ASL and knowledgeable of the culture; Deaf residential schools, Community Services for the Deaf centers, relay services, and interpreting agencies need people with knowledge of Deaf culture and community for positions such as media relations, sales, business management, and technology.

Waiting until you're almost ready to graduate is too late to begin to prepare for your career interviews.  During your time in college, you'll want to refine and focus your career goal.  Taking an appropriate minor, or even a double major, will help make you marketable when it's time to apply for jobs.  Similarly, completing a quality individual investigation project can give you in-depth experience and knowledge of a specific area, and demonstrate your skills, which can also improve your marketability. Turning a short community service project into a long-term relationship with an agency or organization, and improving your networking within the Deaf community can also improve the chances that your eventual job search will be successful.  Recommendation letters can also be of help....but if you're going to want one from the ASL program at KSU, you need to plan ahead of time (see more information about this at http://www.freewebs.com/thorykksu/recommendationletters.htm  )

To help provide information on current job openings, as well as information about the types of careers possible, I'll post advertisements here during each semester, then start anew with the next semester. Some of the postings are appropriate for individuals just beginning their careers; other openings are posted to demonstrate goals for which you might want to aim!

People who know ASL can do almost ANYTHING...if they plan well, develop appropriate skills and are willing to work!!!
